Depression is one of the world’s leading causes of suicide. Due to the nature of the illness it can be considered a silent killer. Interestingly, virtually everyone has a bout of these symptoms has some point in their life however this is temporary. It becomes an issue when it recurs and gets progressively worse over time. There are numerous forms of the disorder. One of the most common is referred to as unipolar depression. Unipolar depression typically leaves the same effects but the unipolar depression symptoms are more dormant in comparison to other types such as bipolar depression. So what is unipolar depression exactly? If you look at a unipolar depression definition, you will find that it is also referred to as clinical depression as well as major depressive disorder. It is primarily a concern for women and it is usually prevalent at older ages.

To describe the symptoms in one word, it would be apathy. Individuals who have unipolar depression lose interest in virtually everything. Things that usually amuse or interest them, no longer garner a response from them. This even includes eating and sleeping. Basic activities required to sustain life. a feeling of hopelessness and worthlessness is also commonly seen in depressed individuals. Insomnia and loss of appetite can lead to secondary diseases which worsen the state. Unipolar depression may last for a short period of time or can be chronic lasting for several years.

The disease can be caused by an array of factors. There are various explanations as to how it initiates. It could progress over a period of time or could happen abruptly. There is also a hereditary link. It is mostly occurred by environmental and psychological factors such as stress as well as traumatic experiences. Hormonal imbalance can also trigger this form of the disorder.

Thankfully, unipolar depression treatment is widely available and should be promptly looked into particularly if the victim is showing signs of becoming suicidal. An antidepressant is the first choice prescribed by doctors. It is highly effective and works almost instantly. However, it may not be the best option. A better option would be psychotherapy to recognize the root cause of the condition and treat that as well as lifestyle modifications.

This type of the disorder should not be taken lightly. If anyone is exhibiting the tell-tale signs of depression it should be looked at as soon as possible before it takes its toll.
