What is Clinical Depression? Definition

Considering the numbers, depression may not be considered serious but don’t be fooled. Despite the fact that everyone experiences depression at some point, it can quickly become a recurring phenomenon before you find yourself diagnosed with clinical depression. Clinical depression can affect you in virtually every way. It can ruin your career, relationships and yourself. it could further damage your health when you start exhibiting symptoms such as insomnia.

So what is clinical depression? Almost 20 million Americans are diagnosed with the disease every year. This is a staggering number indeed. This makes clinical depression one of the most common diseases to affect people in the United States. Fortunately, most of these individuals are treated eventually. Clinical depression is however responsible for a several thousands of death by suicide in America every year.

Now that you know the clinical depression definition, let’s look at some of the causes and other aspects. One of the main issues with clinical depression is that it is not diagnosed and treated appropriately. Since the symptoms are not particularly apparent of blatant in nature, it is left untreated which worsens the condition over time.

Clinical depression can be often confused with the usual downs of life. Feeling sad is common, however it is not something permanent or long term. Of course a tragic loss can leave you sad for a period of time but eventually you improve. Additionally, there is a very specific reason behind your sadness. With clinical depression, individuals often are not aware as to why exactly they feel hopeless or depressed. This is a clear sign of depression.

The symptoms of the disease may be apparent in numerous ways. Often it is a combination of symptoms that appear over a period of time. Your attitude and perception towards things is the most telling symptom as it can change drastically. Individuals usually feel indifferent towards virtually everything. Sleep and appetite can also be affected. This can go one of two ways. The victim either sleeps and eats too much or the opposite.

Clinical depression may be treated in a number of ways from drugs to hypnosis. Counseling can go a long way. Certain doctors swear by antidepressants while others believe that depressed individuals may develop dependence towards it over time. Individuals who are suicidal should be paid very close attention to and should not be left alone at any times.
