There are lots of causes of depression and they can be divided into primary and secondary ones. Some people can suffer from this mental illness, because of stressful events, the others because of drugs taking. Stress, abuse, upsetting, illness or genetics, conflicts, money or job worries, divorce, bereavement and other personal concerns are among the most common causes of depression. All of above mentioned factors can trigger “reactive depression”, which means that people react on some stressful situations and, as a result they suffer from this psychological disorder. Now, let us consider all causes of depression in details.
Genetics and drugs
Some medications can be among causes of depression. For example, patients suffering from high blood pressure can take reserpine or beta-blockers. These medications increase the mental disorder risk. Especially older people risk to have psychological disorder, when taking beta-blockers, barbiturates and benzodiazepines. At the same time, mania can be associated with anticholinergics, corticosteroids and opioids, especially morphine and codeine. Sometimes this mental disorder can co-exists with serious illness. As for other causes of depression, alcohol and recreational drugs abuse (cocaine, cannabis, etc.) should be mentioned, too. As is known, men are not to drink more than two pints of alcohol a day. As for women, they should not drink more than one and half pint a day.
As it was told earlier, genetics is also among causes of depression. This mental disorder can run in family. Parents and children of people suffering from serious mental disorder have more chances to suffer from it than people taking certain medications, having personal problems or abusing alcohol and any substances. Though, scientists have not identified a gene of “depression”, yet.
Personal problems
The next causes of depression are past emotional, sexual, physical abuse and conflicts with relatives, friends or colleagues. Substance abuse can also result in this disorder. According to researches, 30 per cents of people suffering from depression have problems with substance abuse. Death is one more factor. We feel grief and sadness loosing loved people. And though these feelings are natural they also should be mentioned among causes of depression.
Of course, these are not all causes of depression. And let us not forget, sometimes psychological disorder can appear without any cause.
