Divorce and Depression

April 18th, 2012 admin Overview & Facts depression 0 comments

The fact that everyone seems to be doing it these days doesn’t take the sting away from a divorce. Divorce is a painful and stressful period for the couple involved and for their close acquaintances and relatives. Even if one or both members in the marriage want it, it is still a difficult time as it instantly changes a person’s life and terminates one large portion of your life that matters. The situation can become even more complicated and difficult to handle if children are involved. With all the mental and emotional strain associated with the procedure, depression after divorce is a common occurrence.

Divorce and depression is connected due to a number of reasons. If one of the couple doesn’t want the divorce, the reason behind the divorce depression is fairly certain. The feeling of loss and that large void made by the culmination of the marriage is something that can take quite a while to get over. It’s like a part of your life is no longer there. A good amount of each day is spent with that significant other and once it is suddenly gone it can be difficult to cope up resulting in divorce depression. This form of the disorder usually heals with time. Having a close friend or relative to provide company and simply lend a listening ear can always help expedite the process of getting over the marriage.

Besides the grief of loss, the disorder can also be caused due to the increased amount of stress with the divorce proceedings. A lot of issues need to be sorted out and settled. With work and other commitments, making time for this life changing and sad procedure can be a serious strain on a person. Stress is one of the most influential factors when it comes to major depressive disorder.

Another standpoint of depression and divorce is the idea of depression causing a divorce. When a married person develops the disorder, it is usually easier to cope up with as they have someone who loves them dearly to get through it however sometimes symptoms can be severe and prolonged which may eventually damage the relationship and sometimes even end in divorce. Divorce depression in this manner is quite possible and depends on the severity and duration of the condition as well as how close the married couple is. It goes without saying that depression and divorce are closely linked.
