If you are exhibiting the symptoms of depression, there is a good chance that your diet may be responsible. Excessive or inadequate intake of certain nutrients is known to cause the symptoms of the disorder. Diet and depression have been closely linked for years and now it’s clearer than ever that your diet is vital in order to keep the symptoms of the condition at bay. Stress is a common state that plagues virtually everyone at some point in their life. it is a normal part of life. However, it does result in symptoms associated with depression, anxiety and other mental disorders.

According to certain studies, what separates people who can handle their stress from individuals who break down and develop clinical conditions depends on the amount of a certain brain chemical present in their body. This chemical is known to be converted into serotonin, a vital neurotransmitter in the brain that can upset various processes if not available in sufficient quantities. There are certain foods known to boost serotonin levels within the body. This clearly indicates that depression and diet are linked.

When considering a depression diet, one of the main aspects that need to be considered is vitamins. Vitamins have been known to cause or prevent the symptoms of the disorder. Inadequate amounts of Vitamin B have been linked to depression. Therefore a diet for depression should comprise of foods high in Vitamin B. Another finding was that excessive Vitamin A is also linked to the symptoms of the condition. A depression diet should regulate levels of vitamin A and only provide the recommended daily allowance.

Another aspect to consider is the quantity of macronutrients. A diet which is in excess of protein and contains negligible amounts of carbohydrates or fat may deplete blood glucose levels which can alter a person’s mood and make them feel less lively and energetic. Interestingly, binging on carbohydrates is also known to inhibit the tell-tale signs of depression. Besides this, a depression diet should also comprise of herbal medications and other vital health supplements in order to boost the overall health of a person. this includes foods like green tea which has powerful anti-oxidizing properties which rids the body off toxins and makes a person more healthy. This in turn would help relieve the patient of some of the depression related symptoms.
