Diabetes and Depression

March 31st, 2012 admin Overview & Facts depression 0 comments

Diabetes and depression are two major conditions that affect a significantly large population throughout the world. Despite being very distinctive from each other in every way, based on studies, there is apparently a link that exists between diabetes and depression. First of all let’s look at a brief introduction to the two disorders. With diabetes, the cause is very specific and well known. A lack of insulin production due to any reason is what results in the condition. Insufficient insulin results in the body being unable to process large amounts of glucose which can lead to a variety of symptoms. People with diabetes suffer from a range of limitations, symptoms and conditions. Adequate care and exercising restraint allows an individual to successfully control symptoms.

Depression on the other hand is a mental disorder and while there are speculations as to the cause, it is still unclear why it occurs. Ample evidence suggests that neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin (the lack of) are partly responsible for the development of the disorder. Most treatments now focus on elevating levels or stimulating production of this neurotransmitter. This disorder results in a number of mental symptoms as well as physical ones making it hard to isolate.

As you can see depression and diabetes are quite different to each other but evidence suggests that someone with diabetes is more prone to depression. The diabetes depression link has become more prominent in recent times as several cases of depression are also individuals who are dealing with diabetes as well. There is no scientific explanation as to the link between diabetes and depression but there is certainly an association between the two. Another factor to remember is that diabetes requires a lifestyle change and failing to incorporate proper practices to manage the disorder can result in symptoms similar to depression. This does not mean the person has depression. On the other hand, people with diabetes may develop the disorder as well.

This could be due to the stress and strain the disease tends to have on the individual. Restricting one’s diet and being vigilant of the symptoms can certainly take its toll mentally. This can contribute to development of the disorder.  Developing depression in the midst of diabetes can be dangerous as it can lead you to neglect your diabetes which can severely affect your health. If you or anyone you know who is a diabetes patient is exhibiting symptoms, seek treatment immediately.
