Depression in College Students

It is an understood fact that depression is a phenomenon that can affect people at different stages in their lives. Periods in life where individuals experience intense change, meeting crossroads or at a juncture where their lives move from one level to the next are common places that people may become riddled with the disorder. One such time where a lot of change takes place is during college. College depression is fairly common and experienced by a good percentage of college students for a number of reasons. College shapes you for the future; it’s an entirely new experience. Most people would be away from family fending for themselves.

Some of the things that can result in depression in college students include balancing work and college if they are working, dealing with various kinds of people, peer pressure, the pressure to pass and meet deadlines with assignments as well as relationships. Socializing is an integral aspect of college students and not being able to blend with peers is also a reason for depression among college students. The change in environment and lifestyle may also trigger depression in college out of nostalgia or other emotions that may affect them.

As you age, people tell you that there are no friends like your friends in school. This may well be true as we’ve seen decades later, friends who stay together who have known each other since the days of school. These closely knit acquaintances are sometimes lost when the exciting time of college unravels which can also result in college depression. Financial constraints can also wear someone down particularly if they are fighting to make ends meet, at some point, it may get to them and before they know it, they will be exhibiting the typical symptoms of the disorder.

Based on certain studies, a whopping 75% of college students go through depression at some point during the phase. Being so prevalent, it needs to be addressed. Suicide in these years is fairly common. While drug abuse may be a common cause, depression also plays a role. The treatment for college students are similar for any other type of the disorder and should be sought out and implemented immediately. Depression and college students seem to be a popular topic, and unless something is incorporated to rectify the issue, it could lead to serious consequences.
