Depression Diagnosis

April 29th, 2012 admin Overview & Facts depression 0 comments

Depression can be a complex disorder on so many different levels. The sheer versatility and unique variants of the cases involved alone can make it quite hard to diagnose. When it comes to this disorder, the main issue is diagnosing and concluding that a patient actually has the condition. Often times, the disorder can be misconstrued as something else. Sometimes, another underlying condition may be accidentally diagnosed as depression. With the disorder, getting a proper depression diagnosis is vital. A good depression diagnosis will provide information on the severity of the malady as well as the variant.

The process for diagnosis of depression starts with ruling out any other potential disorders. The symptoms of depression are plenty and quite generic. They can apply to numerous other conditions. For this reason, the first step would be to consider the possibility of other disorders. Of course, if the symptoms are rather obvious such as noticeable apathy and a family history of the condition, this step may be skipped, but in most situations, other diseases are first ruled out. Next, a series of questions are asked in order to deduce the possibility of the condition. This is the only way to diagnose the condition as there are no physiological signs to suggest the disorder.

The only surefire way to improve the accuracy of the depression diagnosis is to collect ample information. An extensive interview covering all topics would ensure that a proper diagnosis is carried out. Like most other diagnoses, you can find the diagnosis code for depression as well. Depending on the type of depression you suspect, different diagnostic codes are available. Despite depression being a mental disorder, a nursing diagnosis for depression is not usually done. While it is possible, there is no official method of acquiring a depression nursing diagnosis.

Remember that the diagnosis is the most important step when it comes to the condition as treating and bringing the disorder to a level where symptoms are mild or even negligible can be done fairly effective. Of course, there are times when it can be a little complicated. Some individuals may be resistant to antidepressants which can make treatment for these patients a nightmare. Fortunately, there are a number of alternative treatments available. Ideally, even if the individual is receptive to antidepressants, it would be advisable to seek natural, alternative remedies as they are safer and can be equally effective.
