Depression and Anxiety

April 11th, 2012 admin Overview & Facts depression 0 comments

Depression and anxiety are perhaps the two most popular mental disorders that affect people. Virtually everyone would have experienced some form of either of these two conditions during their lifetime. While there are many similarities to these maladies, the symptoms associated with them are virtually at polar opposites. In both disorders, it is normal for people to experience it every once in a while with the stresses and concerns that life brings about but prolonged feelings of anxiety and depression in both cases are not considered normal.

Another similarity with depression and anxiety are the effects. We’re not referring to symptoms here but how they affect your life. They both can completely cripple productivity and heavily interfere with your career, relationships and fitness. With depressions, individuals tend to become irrationally sad and negative, and may become apathetic where they lose interest in virtually everything that is otherwise enjoyable. With anxiety, people tend to become irrationally worried and anxious about an array of things. The anxiety can be projected at a single thing or several things, and the main factor that makes it a mental disorder is that these worries and concerns are rather irrational. People may develop anxiety towards relationships, health, work or life in general.

Anxiety cripples a person as the worry revolves around a person’s head and interferes with them performing any other tasks. Anxious individuals can spend hours upon hours worrying about the same thing playing back numerous unlikely scenarios which can worsen the state. Depression and anxiety can both lead to suicidal tendencies although it is more common in the case of depression. Both disorders can be treated using an array of methods and in some cases; the same type of treatment may be effective for both the conditions.

There are anxiety depression treatment centers that specialize only in treating individuals with these mental disorders. Depression can provide quick relief when antidepressants are consumed while in the case of anxiety, antipsychotics are prescribed. Methods such as talk therapy and conventional treatments such a acupuncture and meditation can be used to remedy both disorders.

There is also another rare disorder sometimes called depression anxiety where a person is anxious that they may develop depression. This can be a rather confusing mental state to be in as the symptom of these two conditions is quite opposite to each other.

Whether it is anxiety or depression, both diseases should be diagnosed and treated in time to save yourself from the unnecessary effects that the disorders produce.
