Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression

February 22nd, 2012 admin Depression Therapies & Medical Procedures 0 comments

Behavioral therapy for depression has long been used to change the perception and alter the state of mind of a person affected with the disorder into a brighter and positive one. Cognitive behavioral therapy and depression can be linked to the famous experiment referred to as Pavlov’s dog which utilizes the principles behind behavioral therapy to identify a dog’s perceptions. Today, it is effectively used to eliminate the negative emotion and thought processes associated with depression.

Unlike other treatment methods, cognitive behavioral therapy techniques for depression focus on the current aspects. Doctors who are specialized in behavioral therapy for depression are not concerned with the root cause of the disorder. This approach can be beneficial as well as detrimental depending on the situation. If the root cause is due to a hormonal imbalance or other issue, behavioral therapy may not be effective or it may hinder the treatment of the root cause. If the condition, on the other hand is caused by mental triggers due to past incidents including trauma or other aspects, behavioral therapy for depression is an excellent remedy.

Rather than concentrating on the cause, the doctor is concerned with the current symptoms and mental processes. He evaluates these aspects and uses behavioral therapy to eliminate the negativity. Cognitive therapy is all about communication. The doctor may ask a series of questions that are related to the present concerned with the disorder. Based on the answers to these specific questions, a remedial plan is devised.

Cognitive behavior therapy is an intensive form of treatment but it is also a natural exercise that does not constitute of any medicine or drugs. While the primary mode of treatment is by simply talking to the patient and helping them understand the reason behind their thoughts, there may be other activities prescribed to help the patient better understand the reason behind their emotions which will help them change for the better. Behavioral therapy uses logic and reasoning to convince the person with the disorder that their response is irrational which will help them eventually get over the negative mental state and in turn the negative symptoms.

Cognitive therapy also includes trying out unconventional techniques such as exercises that help you relax as well as role playing. Feelings towards this form of treatment is mixed but done correctly, it can be one of the best natural treatments for depression.
