Treating depression can be done in a variety of ways. One of the most effective and simplest ways to do this is by regulating your diet. There are several foods that help depression symptoms. Basically, certain foods are linked to specific brain chemicals that trigger depression. Foods for depression can either boost or reduce the levels of these chemicals. Serotonin, for example, is an essential brain chemical. Deficiency of the chemical is known to be linked to depression. Having excess caffeine and certain types of carbs can deplete the levels of serotonin.

Foods that help with depression typically do this by boosting serotonin levels in the body. Antidepressants are usually prescribed for this purpose. to regulate levels of certain brain chemicals in the body however they produce unpleasant side effects and can lead to dependence. Foods for depression on the other hand, produce the same positive effects of antidepressants without the side effects. This article will cover three of the best foods for depression.

  • High protein foods, particularly meat are one of the best foods for depression. It comprises of certain amino acids that are linked to serotonin. It would be recommended to stick to white meats rather than red due to excess saturated fat in red meat.
  • Fish is rich omega-3 fatty acids, sometimes referred to as “healthy fats” or “good fats”. Based on comprehensive studies, individuals who are depressed tend to have lower levels of this type of fat which indicates that omega-3 is instrumental in alleviating depression. This too has been linked to boost serotonin levels. Besides fighting depression, omega-3 is a vital component for various other aspects of health such as maintaining a healthy heart and lowering your dreaded cholesterol levels.
  • Brown Rice – Among various health benefits of brown rice, it is rich in B vitamins. B vitamins and depression have been closely linked in several studies. Inadequate levels of B vitamins have proven to have an effect on the disorder. There are several B vitamins however the most important ones to fight depression are B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and Folic acid which brown rice is rich in. Additionally brown rice is a low glycemic index food so it prevents excessive sugar in the bloodstream.

These are three of the most important foods to help fights depression. Bear in mind that incorporating the above foods into your diet alone may not completely alleviate the symptoms but it will certain help your cause.
